Top 17 Best PC Games of the 2000’s video is online!

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Wrapping up this part of my celebration of the IBM PC’s 30th birthday, I’m taking a look at my selection of the best PC games from each decade. Finally, we have the 2000’s. Such a mixed decade for me, since it seems the PC really started getting the shaft more than any other time these ten years, yet some freaking absolutely amazing games still resulted. Oh well, go-go-gadget videos!

    Deus Ex voiceacting was cheesy?

    • At times, it is laughably hilarious. Like, comic book cheesy. Over-the-top evil people laughter, random NPCs who so obviously are reading from a script, etc. It’s not all the time by any means, but it’s pretty ridiculous here and there.
Reminds me of the issue with Heavy Rain somewhat… most of the time, the voice acting is fine. But when it’s really out of place, it’s REALLY out of place!

Strangely, after looking up some release dates, most of the games I played in the early 2000s that I loved were released in 1999, like System Shock 2, Descent 3 and MechWarrior 3. Go figure. : P

But yeah, around 2003 I started shifting from PC to console games, so for most of the 00s I didn’t really play many PC games, which isn’t to say I didn’t play any. Games which readily come to mind which didn’t make your top 17 include Freelancer, Oblivion, Star Trek: Bridge Commander, Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and MechWarrior 4.

Just goes to show how many awesome games there are every decade! ; )

I’m okay with everything on this list except one game: Morrowind. I tried so hard to get into that game, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t even kill a stupid bug to gain Experience. I got frustrated and uninstalled the game.

Hello Clint. I’m posting this here because I don’t want any hate comments on YouTube. There are far less trolls here. xD

Great video. I loved the 80’s 90’s and 2000’s video.

I’m very impressed that you decided to put Postal 2 on your top list. We already talked about it and I felt all warm inside when I sawed you poping off all those heads. 🙂

UT2004 is also amazing, because of it’s fast action. But I actually think that both that game and UT3 are amazing. I played them both, and enjoyed them.

I’m also glad that you see Crysis as a game and not a benchmarking tool. I really enjoyed the game, some of my friends think that it’s stupid just because of monsters.

And I think that Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing deserves to be on the No1 spot. Oh wait, that is Half-Life 2. When I first saw Big Rigs, I thought “Has he gone crazy?!” and then I saw the HL2 and started clapping like crazy. I personally can’t put HL2 on the No1 spot if I created my Top list, but it would be darn close maybe even 2.

Great list, I know that this has been hard for you to create, but great job. Can’t wait for more your “lazy” reviews!

Oh yeah, I forgot about Max Payne 1. I first played Max Payne 2. It was freaking awesome. I played Max Payne 1. It was freaking awesome. I can say only that.

  5. You’ve got great insights about Computer Games, keep up the good work!

  6. Jasper says:

Ooh i’m missing Mass Effect. Probably THE game that I got sucked into the most…..(next to the monkey island remakes) 😉

    • LORD MJ says:

I second this. Mass Effect has to have the best story telling I’ve ever seen. And it haves a really addictive gameplay. Wonder why this hasn’t gotten in to your list Clint. Care to explain why?

I know that it’s all about personal taste but Mass Effect is to much a big game to be left out.

      • It just wasn’t “my thing”. BioWare’s style is very… BioWare. Amazing to some, pretty cool to me but just not my favorite in the world. Like you said, it’s all about personal taste.
Now ME2 seemed like I might enjoy it a bit more due to some of the changes/improvements to combat, transportation and interaction, but I’ve simply never had the chance to play it.

  7. Shagittarius says:

Good list, Others worth pointing out as well; Vampire : Bloodlines, Wizardry 8 (The last and greatest), Painkiller, Arx Fatalis, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2,…I see what you mean you can just go on and on about all the great games…

Anyone on Raptr feel like friending me I’m “Shagittarius”.

  8. Kevin Dady says:

I have a very hard time choosing GTA Vice City at face value on PC, and modded GTA IV.

That is why they are both installed heh…

  9. ZAR says:

Excellent list, I enjoyed it quite a lot! 🙂

    Regarding Saints Row 2:

The OTHER thing we PC gamers are pretty screwed is the DLC which has not been released to this day.

BUT… there’s already a most excellent mod out there (which even contains some missions adapted from the consoles’ DLC)!

Check out The Gentlemen of the Row Saints Row 2 Super Mod:

I bought Saints Row 2 today and screwed myself pretty hard :/
I got glitch which make game run 2x faster than it should. Its pretty well known bug and was fixed by fans… fix works only on W7 and i have XP 😀
Sent email to steam asking for refund. Don’t have my hopes high since thay have no refund poilicy :/

And i was actually looking forward to play it after watching video… dang

  11. BrunoB says:

Will you ever do a HL2 review?

  12. Ricky Reis says:

A list with game names and types would be awesome, plus putting up the pc system requirements would come in handy 😎
